‘Sub-Rosa,’ a Latin phrase meaning ‘under the rose’ refers to something done in secret. The girl in my painting is bent low against the earth, her face heavy like stone. 
 
Isolated with a small perspective of the world at her feet she clasps the earth. Is she doing this in defeat or is she praying? Perhaps she is listening to the earth? The painting is open to interpretation & can be read in many ways.
